Geschichte und Legende:
Nach einer alten Legende, entstand die Villa aus dem Unterschlupf eines Banditen im 15 Jhdt. Später wurde die Hütte erweitert und zu einem Bauernhof ausgebaut, bis sie schließlich von Andrea Doria (1466-1560), ein berühmter Admiral und Heerführer einer alten genuesischen Familie ausgebaut wurde und ihre elegante Form erhielt.
Im Park wurd die berühmte Schlacht von Novi (15.August 1799) geschlagen, in der die Franzosen von den Österreichern und Russen unter der Führung von Alexander Suvorov besiegt wurden. Die Schlacht wurde festgehalten in einem Bild des romantischen Malers Alexander Kotzebue. Im hintergrund sieht man die Villa, wie sie damals aussah.
Im frühen 19. Jhdt. Wurde die Villa zum Eigentum der genuesischen Familie Balbi, die im internationalen Handel- und Bankengeschäft sehr bekannt war. In diesen Jahren wurde der obere Teil der Villa von ihnen weiterentwickelt. Sie engagierten den bekannten Maler Barabino für die Fresken in den Hallen, darin eingeschloßen die Potraits der vier Männer, die Italien vereint hatten, im Speisesaal. Vittorio Emanuele II, Guiseppe Garibaldi, Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour und Guiseppe Mazzini.
Vom späten 19. Jhdt bis in die Mitte des 20. Jhdts. gehörte das Anwesen der Familie Sacco del Santo. Deren letzter Nachkomme, der Marquis Domenico Sacco del Santo, interessierte sich sehr für Pflanzen und Gärten. Dank ihm und seinen Reisen befinden sich im Park nun unzählige Pflanzen, nicht zu vergessen die russischen Rosen, die im Winter blühen.

History and legend.

According to legend, the villa originated from
the shelter of a bandit in the 15th century.

Later the hut was enlarged and turned into a
farmhouse, until Andrea Doria (1466-1560), a
famous admiral and condottiero from an ancient
family of Genoa, enlarged and gave it more elegant
features.

In its park was fought the famous Battle of
Novi (15 August 1799), one of the French
Revolutionary Wars during which the Austrians
and the Russians, led by Alexander Suvorov,
defeated the French. The battle is also represented
in a work by the Romantic painter Alexander
Kotzebue where the villa, as it was at that time,
is visible in the background.

In the early 19th century the villa became a
property of the Genoese Balbi family, well-known
in the international trading and merchant banking
environments. In these years, they developed the
upper part of the villa and appointed the famous
painter Barabino for the frescoes in the halls,
including the portraits in the banquet room of the
four men who unified Italy: Vittorio Emanuele II,
Giuseppe Garibaldi, Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour
and Giuseppe Mazzini.

From late 19th century to mid-20th the property
was owned by the Sacco del Santo family, whose
last descendant, Marquis Domenico Sacco del Santo,
had a great interest in plants and gardens and
thanks to him and his travels the garden now
enjoys numerous flower varieties, including
Russian roses that bloom in winter.
